Lifeguard Instructor Training

This course is offered a couple times per year or as needed. Certifications with LGI will allow individuals to teach lifeguard training classes, CPR/AED for the Professional, Oxygen Administration, Preventing Disease Transmission and Waterpark. Additional courses may be needed to teach Waterpark module. Note: Those interested in Waterfront Lifeguarding should be directed to the Aquatic Operations Manager or the Aquatic Training and Audit Coordinator.

Lifeguard Instructor has the following prerequisites, which are considered the pre-course:

  • Must be 17 years or older on or before the final session of this course. Proof of age required. It must be in the form of a Learner's Permit, Drivers License, Military ID or a Birth Certificate. Bring ID with you to the Pre-course or first class.
  • Each participant will swim 300 meters continuously, using these in the following order:
    • 100 meters of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and stabilizing, propellant kick. 
    • 100 meters of breaststroke. 
    • 100 meters of either the front crawl or breaststroke. These 100 meters may be a mixture of both.
  • Each participant will start in the water, swim 20 meters using the front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute 40 seconds.
  • Perform rescue, CPR/AED and First Aid skills
  • Complete the prerequisite skills test and 3 final skills scenarios
  • Take the pre-course written examination
