News from Massanutten Resort

Dear MPOA Friends,

Massanutten Resort has recently created this webpage in an effort to provide the community with current information that we hope you will find helpful. The site will be updated on a monthly basis and as needed. While our current update is primarily focused on the recent informational sessions held at our Ski Sports Learning Center, we plan to expand the content to cover more resident related topics in the coming months.

402Trails has almost finished construction on our new mountain bike park! We are hoping to have some trails open this coming weekend, July 23. Be sure to take advantage of your MPOA 20% discount!

For Opening Day, will have two Green trails and a Blue trail on the lower mountain lift and two Blue/Black trails along with the reworked World Cup trail on the upper mountain. A second “Black” trail will open later this summer. The bike carriers for the lifts have arrived and our lift maintenance crew is busy prepping them for installation!

Continued thanks to those of you that were able to attend the informational session this past Friday. Your comments, ideas, and support proved helpful to the project, and your positive energy encourages us to work even harder to continue improving the great community we all live and work in.

We will be making several updates to the page this week, including providing responses to the first round of questions. For those of you that would like to receive a text or quick email when new information is available, we will have a sign-up option ready for you.

For those who were unable to attend, we are sorry that we missed you! Please feel free to peruse the information below and reach out to us with any questions. Given the benefits of face-to-face communication, we will plan on holding a similar forum at some point during late summer.

We continue to be grateful for the opportunity to engage, interact, and support the Massanutten community lifestyle.

Looking forward to continuing the conversation online and seeing everyone later this summer.

Construction Updates

Construction Updates

September 26, 2016

Over the next two weeks, Miss Utility will be locating the utilities along both sides of Massanutten Drive. You will see people walking the located route and recording the markings. These markings will be used in the future to determine the location of the new water line. Lots that are closest to the water line will be marked by Valley Engineering with an orange ribbon or with a stake.

September 9, 2016

We have selected A & J Excavation to assist us with water line project and they are currently involved in the design and engineering process. You may see their trucks throughout the mountain over the upcoming weeks. A & J has been a long time partner with the resort for many years and will be very conscientious about their work. Please do keep us posted if you see anything out of the ordinary.

August 24, 2016

Design and engineering of the water line system continues. We have interviewed three local contractors for the project, all of whom are conscientious of the Resort and MPOA community and operations. Further updates at the next community meeting. Date coming soon.

May 12, 2016

The permit has been sent into the DEQ. The construction plan is currently in the design stage. This should take several months.

March 28, 2016

5' x 5' white squares with an X in the middle will be applied along the proposed path of the water line.

These squares are for the topographic aerial survey. You may see a small plane flying overhead.

Questions & Answers

Questions & Answers

Questions & Answers

How big will the new pond be? Approx 7 million gallons of water.

Who will maintain the new trail? Asphalt trail will be maintained by MPOA. Natural surface trail will be maintained by GERM.

Will this affect fishing? No changes to fishing at Painters Pond or Hopkins Pond.

What are the benefits of getting more water into the Kettle?

  • Reliable source of snowmaking water (independent of precipitation).
  • Alternate source of water for snowmaking and golf irrigation should Painter's pond become unavailable.
  • Better storm water management. (We'll be able to lower the pond prior to big rain events and know that we can fill it back up if the event doesn't occur)
  • More reliable water levels in Painters Pond. Full ponds are more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Better for wildlife.
  • Putting water back into the watershed from which it came.
  • Fewer algae blooms in Painter's Pond.

What agencies are involved with permitting? Primarily the Army Corps of Engineers and the DEQ.

Will all of the water go into Painter’s Pond? Either into Painters Pond or directly into the snowmaking system. We will get more details once we have the permit.

What will the pipe be made of?  Ductile Iron

Can’t we just excavate/dredge Painter’s Pond? Dredging does not give us any additional usable water, as the dredged area will be below the intake line to the pumps. The pond was also expanded around 1990 down to bed rock. Expanding again would likely involve blasting and there is no guarantee that it would hold water.

What if it breaks? We will dig and repair as is normally done.

After you get more water, what is next? We will improve the snowmaking system to maximize our snowmaking opportunities.
