A summer week at Massanutten gives your family a chance to enjoy the mountain and venture a little farther into the Shenandoah Valley. One day means cooling off at the WaterPark, another exploring Luray Caverns, and another floating down the Shenandoah River together. Along the way, there are animals to meet, things to make, and a few quieter moments to enjoy the view. Use this itinerary as is to plan your getaway, or use it as inspiration to create your own family summer week.
Welcome to Massanutten! Once you’ve checked in and settled into your accommodations, ease into the week with an afternoon at the stables. Take a guided horseback ride through the green mountain scenery, let younger kids enjoy a pony ride, and stop by the petting zoo to meet some of the resort’s four-legged residents.
For dinner, make your way to Campfire Grill for wood-fired pizza, burgers, steaks, and other hearty favorites. If the weather is nice, grab a seat outside by the fire on the deck and enjoy your first summer evening on the mountain.

Make your first full day a Waterpark day. Spend the morning moving between indoor attractions and summer favorites outside, from slides and splash zones to the wave pool.
When everyone gets hungry, stay inside the Waterpark for a sit-down lunch at Splash’s or something quick from the Snack Shack, then stop by Sweetz for a cold summer treat. Before leaving the Waterpark, keep the family competition going with a few games at Diamond Jim’s Arcade.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at Base Camp, then see what’s happening as part of Massanutten’s Summer Jamboree. Free programming takes place across the resort throughout the season, with everything from live music and outdoor movies to family game nights, pickleball, and other community events included with your stay.
Take a day trip to Luray Caverns, where the whole family can explore a massive underground cave system filled with towering formations, mirrored pools, Dream Lake, the Cathedral, and the Great Stalacpipe Organ. The year-round 54-degree temperature also makes the caverns a refreshing break from a hot summer afternoon.
Grab lunch in Luray afterward, or stop in nearby Elkton on your way back toward Massanutten before returning to the resort for dinner.
Start the morning with a Massanutten Select class and choose something the family can create together, from canvas painting and suncatcher making to candle making and other hands-on experiences on the schedule.
After lunch on-site, spend the afternoon at the Massanutten Village Family Entertainment Center. Challenge each other to mini golf, climb behind the wheel of a go kart, take a spin in the bumper cars, and enjoy some classic summer vacation fun together.
Tonight, pick up something to cook in your condo, enjoy dinner with the green mountain scenery outside, and make it a family game or movie night.
Spend the day in downtown Harrisonburg with a visit to Explore More Discovery Museum, where kids can climb, build, experiment, and explore their way through hands-on exhibits. Afterward, grab lunch downtown, wander a few nearby shops, or stop for something sweet before making your way back to the mountain.
Cool off with a lazy summer float down the Shenandoah River with Massanutten Adventures. Settle into your own tube, drift along a little over a mile of the river, and take in the Shenandoah Valley scenery as the current carries you toward the Elkton boat landing. Transportation from Massanutten, life jackets, and a safety orientation are all included, so you can simply enjoy the time on the water.
Afterward, grab lunch in nearby Elkton before returning to the mountain. For your final dinner, revisit a favorite from the week, whether that’s Base Camp for casual mountain fare and relaxed views or Campfire Grill for wood-fired favorites and a seat outside by the fire.
Spend your final morning with one last ride above the mountain on the scenic chairlift. Glide over the green summer treeline, look out across the Shenandoah Valley, and enjoy a final quiet moment before checking out. If your route takes you through Elkton or Harrisonburg, stop for lunch along the way and stretch the getaway a little longer.
