A full winter week gives your family time to really get out and enjoy the mountain. Expect active days in the snow, a few chances to warm up indoors, and enough variety to keep the week feeling fresh from start to finish. With more time to explore, you can build in bigger adventure days without making the trip feel rushed. Use this itinerary as is to plan your getaway, or use it as inspiration to build your own family winter adventure.
Welcome to Massanutten! Once you’ve checked in and settled into your accommodations, don’t wait until tomorrow to start the adventure. Bundle up and head to the tubing hill for a first night on the snow, racing down 900 feet of illuminated, snow-covered lanes together while the conveyor lift carries you back to the top for run after run.

Start the day with a warm breakfast at Waffle Hut by the Ski Lodge, then head to the slopes for a full day of skiing or snowboarding. First-timers can get comfortable on beginner terrain, while more experienced skiers and riders can explore farther across the mountain. Kids 6 and under ski free, and beginners ages 7 to 12 can build their skills with Theo’s Cub Club.
Take a break for lunch on the mountain, then spend the afternoon getting in more runs, revisiting favorites, and enjoying the slopes together. If your stay includes a Friday night, make time for the torch parade, when skiers carrying glowing torches make their way down the slopes after dark. On other evenings, check the resort calendar for live music, comedy, and other seasonal events happening around the mountain.
Give your legs a break after a day on the slopes and enjoy a winter drive along Skyline Drive. With the leaves off the trees, winter opens up long views across Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge. Stop at overlooks along the way, and if everyone still has some energy, bundle up for a short trail before grabbing lunch in Elkton, just outside the resort.
After a day of exploring Shenandoah National Park, shift gears with a full day of indoor fun at the Waterpark. Spend the morning on the slides, pools, and indoor attractions, or add a little extra adventure with a FlowRider lesson and see who can find their balance on the wave.
When everyone is ready for lunch, you can stay right inside the Waterpark and choose between Splash’s for a sit-down meal, the Snack Shack for something quick and easy, or Sweetz for a treat.
After lunch, head to Diamond Jim’s Arcade for some family-friendly competition before returning to the condo. Keep the relaxed pace going tonight with dinner and a game night back at your accommodations.
Head off the mountain for a day trip to Luray Caverns, one of the Shenandoah Valley’s most famous natural attractions and a massive underground cave system filled with towering stalactites and stalagmites. Wind past landmarks like Dream Lake, the Cathedral, and the Great Stalacpipe Organ in the caverns’ year-round 54-degree air. Afterward, make your way back toward Massanutten and stop for a late lunch in Luray, Elkton, or Harrisonburg before returning to the resort.
Spend your last full day returning to a favorite winter activity. Head back to the slopes for more skiing or snowboarding, revisit favorite runs, and explore any terrain you missed earlier in the week. Or, slow things down with a few laps around the outdoor ice rink. For one more burst of adventure, take a ride on the nearby Mountain Mayhem Mountain Coaster and control your own speed as you twist and turn your way down the mountain.
Later, grab dinner on-site, then see what’s happening around the resort, from weekend live music at Base Camp to comedy shows and other family-friendly winter events.
Before the drive home, stop by Build-A-Bear inside The Market and let the kids create one last keepsake from the trip. They can choose their stuffed animal, help bring it to life, and head home with a new companion that carries a little piece of their mountain week with them.
